Easter Bunny and Easter Eggs on Easter Sunday

April 11, 2009 | Holiday

Easter Sunday is one of the most important religious events for all Christians. It represents the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead after the third day of his crucifixion. We celebrate Easter Sunday but I asked my self this question. How did Easter Bunny and Easter Eggs associated with Easter Sunday?

The word Easter was derived from Eostre (the goddess of fertility). She symbolized the rebirth of life. Now, Easter celebrates the rebirth of Jesus Christ. Easter falls on the first Sunday on or following the spring Equinox (day that daylight and darkness are equal as the days start getting longer) after the full moon.

Easter Bunny:

In the past, rabbit has been a symbol of fertility. Although there is no religious reason why rabbits were associated to Easter, a rabbit had been a very powerful symbol of fertility and new life. This can be the reason why it was linked to Easter Sunday, the rebirth of Christ Jesus.

Easter Eggs:

Since ancient times, many cultures use eggs to represent rebirth of life during ancient spring festivals. As Christianity took hold, eggs had become a symbol of the rebirth of man.

Although there is no religious relevance between Easter Bunny and Easter Eggs to Easter Sunday, the two symbolizes rebirth and resurrection. These two symbols had become a part of our culture and traditions.
