Protect your product from being stolen

April 30, 2009 | Online Selling

Lots of people want to download online products such as ebooks, videos and audio tutorials for free. They take advantage of the mistakes of most merchants. Many online sellers don’t hide their download pages from search engines thus making them searchable.

People who want to get ebooks for free would use keyword phrases and search them on Google or Alexa. Here are some examples of the keywords:

inurl: “cbreceipt”
“thank you for your purchase” “right click”
“thank you for your payment” “right click”
CLKBANK*COM “save as to download”
“a charge from paypal” download

I revealed to you these search terms not to teach you how to download ebooks, videos and audios for free but for you to be aware of what is happening behind your back. You are the one who is responsible for your products so take some actions to protect them.

Here are some things that you can consider in order to prevent your product from being stolen.

1.  Install tacking codes such as statcounter or google analytics on your download page. Most people would just put these codes on the home page and the sales page. By using of these tracking codes, you will determine the keywords people used to get into your pages.

2. Compress your product using any compression software such as WinZip or WinRar and put a security password on it. Just email the password to your customer after the purchase is completed.

3. Put this meta tag on the header of your download page: <meta name=”robots” content=”noindex, no follow” />. This would tell the search engines not to index and not to follow this page. Put it above the </head> tag. (Recommended)

So next time you set up your website, remember to hide the download page from search engines.
