Save disk space in Windows
Here are some tips on how you can save disk space in Windows.
Decrease the disk usage of the Recycle Bin.
You can rather set the files to be removed immediately when deleted and not put in the recycle bin or you can decrease the space it uses to hold those deleted files.
To configure this option:
- Right click on the Recycle Bin icon.
- Select Properties.
- Adjust the Maximum size of your recycle bin.
- Check “Do not move files to he Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted.” if you want to immediately remove all deleted files.
Disable Hibernation.
Click here to know more about Hibernation in Windows. If you are not using this option, you can save some space by disabling Hibernation in Windows.
To do this:
- Right click on the desktop and click Properties.
- Go to Screen Saver tab.
- Click the Power button under Monitor Power.
- Click the Hibernate Tab.
- Uncheck Enable Hibernation.
- Click OK.
Delete Restore Points in Windows.
The maximum size used by Windows for its Restore Points is 12% of the available hard disk space. You can decrease the value in the System Restore tab but I think that is not a good idea.
But if you really need or want to delete Restore Points to save disk space, follow these steps:
- Click on Start button.
- Select All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup. Or You can run “cleanmgr” (without quotes).
- Go to More Options tab.
- Click Clean up under System Restore.
- Press Yes to confirm the delete operation.
Note: The Disk Cleanup utility will allow you to delete all Restore Points except for the most recent Restore Point.
Run Disk Cleanup.
Run Disk Cleanup using the procedure above and delete all temporary files on the Disk Cleanup tab.
