Some Facts about Google

- The name “Google” came from the word “googol” which refers to 10100, the number represented by a 1 followed by one hundred zeros.

- Google’s corporate headquarter complex is referred to as Googleplex. The name Googleplex is a play on words; a googolplex being a one followed by a googol of zeros. 1 googolplex = 10googol.

- Page Rank, a patent describing part of the Google ranking mechanism was granted on Sept 4, 2001. It was officially assigned to Stanford University and recognized Lawrence Page (co-founder of Google) as the inventor.

- Google began as just a research project of Lawrence “Larry” Page and Sergey Brin when they are Ph.D. students at Stanford University.

- As of March 31, 2009, the company has 20,164 full-time employees.

- The company was being identified as Fortune Magazine’s #1 Best Place to Work and the most powerful brand in the world.

- Revenues— Google reported revenues of $5.51 billion in the first quarter of 2009.

- Google Sites Revenues —Google-owned sites generated revenues of $3.70 billion in the first quarter of 2009.

- Google Network Revenues —Google’s partner sites generated revenues, through AdSense programs, of $1.64 billion in the first quarter of 2009.
